Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is actively searching for a skilled Automated Testing Engineer - Level II. This is a full-time position within the Veterans Affairs (VA) department. We encourage military veterans to apply!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Please note that this is not a Software Quality Assurance (SQA) tester position. Applicants must possess strong programming abilities in languages such as C#, .Net, Java, or Python.

• Develop and execute comprehensive test plans, cases, and procedures to ensure compliance with organizational standards and user requirements.
• Craft detailed test plans, schedules, and methodologies.
• Write test scripts and define data needed for realistic test scenarios.
• Conduct walkthroughs on test cases/scripts with Test Managers, Requirement Leads, Project Managers, and Development Leads.
• Lead software testing and IT systems verification to ensure defect-free operation.
• Perform verification activities on deliverables using established methods and environments.
• Document and communicate test results clearly.
• Assist in analyzing test outcomes and resolving any outstanding issues.
• Log and address complex problems, providing updates on their resolution to management.
• Propose improvements to existing procedures and create models for potential future configurations.
• Create daily metrics and reports on test activities.
• Occasionally engage in other IT systems engineering tasks, including design, installation, and support.
• Apply technical principles and concepts effectively in the field.
• Receive assignments in the form of objectives; establish and meet related goals.
• Provide guidance and support to team members per management's policies.
• Measure the achievement of objectives.
• Deliver technical solutions to a range of challenging problems requiring data analysis.
• Ensure that solutions are innovative, thorough, practical, and aligned with organizational goals.
• Independently determine approaches for solutions.
• Review completed work for adequacy in achieving objectives.
• Exhibit sound judgment in selecting methods for problem-solving.
• Contribute to the successful completion of specific projects.
• Conduct inter-organizational and external communications to address technical issues.
• Represent the organization in solving technical challenges associated with projects.

Required Skills and Experience

• Strong programming skills in languages such as C#, Java, or Python.
• A solid track record of contributing to complex software projects, ensuring high-quality outcomes.
• Experience in both manual and automated testing practices.
• Familiar with Agile/Scrum methodologies and the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
• Capable of writing and executing test cases, scripts, and plans proficiently.
• Strong knowledge of test automation frameworks and tools (e.g., Selenium, TestNG, JUnit, QTP, LoadRunner).
• Experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub Actions).
• Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git, Subversion).
• Understanding of performance testing and related tools (e.g., JMeter, Gatling).
• Experience with defect tracking and management tools (e.g., JIRA, Bugzilla).
• Knowledge of database technologies and SQL for data validation.
• Experience testing web applications, APIs, and services.
• Understanding of security testing practices and tools.
• Experience in diverse testing types, including functional, regression, integration, system, usability, and User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Strong communication and collaboration abilities.
• Able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
• Detail-oriented with a commitment to quality deliverables.
• Proficient in managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
• Ability to mentor and guide junior testers.
• Capable of translating business requirements into effective test scenarios.
• Experience with test management tools.
• Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools.
• Able to conduct test reviews and provide constructive feedback.
• Knowledge of risk-based testing, exploratory testing, and context-driven testing.

Professional Certifications

Advanced certifications in testing or quality assurance are preferred (e.g., ISTQB, CSTE, CSQA).

Years of Professional Experience

A minimum of 10 years in software testing and quality assurance.

Desired Experience

Knowledge of Electronic Data Interchange X.12 (EDI) Medical Claims (e.g., 837, 834, 277) and cloud-based testing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure).

Formal Education

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
