The Lead Data Engineer is a senior technical leadership role responsible for the design, build, operation, and modernisation of enterprise‑grade data platforms, pipelines, and data‑enabled applications within the CIB Client Management environment.

The ideal candidate would have experience working in investment banking and with an understanding of the regulatory environment and complex entities.

The role provides hands‑on technical leadership across the full software and data engineering lifecycle, ensuring delivery of scalable, secure, reliable, and well‑governed data solutions that support analytics, reporting, operational MI, and machine‑learning use cases.

Engineer also plays a critical role in platform modernisation, cloud migration, automation, and operating‑model evolution.

In addition to technical delivery, the role is accountable for engineering standards, data standards, mentoring and capability building, and close partnership with business, analytics, security, and product stakeholders. • *Key Accountabilities** • Data Platform & Pipeline Engineering • Architect, design, and deliver scalable batch and streaming data pipelines, covering ingestion, transformation, orchestration, and serving layers. • Build and maintain trusted, curated data assets for analytics, MI, and machine‑learning consumption. • Own and evolve enterprise data platform architecture, including: • Data modelling • Data Governance • Cost optimisation • Apply distributed systems principles to ensure reliable production pipelines. • Data Reliability, Quality & Observability • Implement data quality, observability, lineage, and governance controls, including: • Automated tests and validation rules • SLAs and SLOs • Monitoring, alerting, and incident response • Root‑cause analysis and continuous improvement • Ensure data reliability and operational excellence across production environments. • Engineering Standards & DevOps • Establish and enforce engineering standards across the data and application estate, including: • Version control and branching strategies • CI/CD pipelines • Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform / CloudFormation) • Coding conventions and documentation standards • Lead technical design reviews and code reviews, driving consistent engineering quality. • Security, Privacy & Governance • Ensure security and privacy by design across all data and application solutions, including: • Least‑privilege access controls • Encryption and auditing • Data retention and compliance requirements • Work effectively within regulated environments, aligning solutions to governance and risk standards. • Stakeholder Engagement & Delivery Leadership • Partner with business, analytics, product, and security stakeholders to translate requirements into reliable, well‑defined data products and technical solutions. • Lead delivery across the full SDLC: design, build, test, release, and production support in an agile/DevOps environment. • Balance delivery commitments with operational excellence and technical debt reduction. • People Leadership & Capability Building • Mentor and coach data and software engineers through: • Design sessions and technical reviews • Pairing and hands‑on guidance • Constructive feedback and skills development • Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and capability uplift, building a high‑performing engineering culture. • Lead by example in collaboration, decision‑making, and engineering professionalism. • *Required Experience & Qualifications** • 8+ years experience in data engineering, software engineering, or platform engineering, with ownership of production systems. • Strong hands‑on experience with: • SQL • Python, Java, Scala, JavaScript, or C# • Proven experience leading technical designs, code reviews, and engineering best practices. • Solid understanding of: • Object‑oriented design • Distributed systems concepts • REST APIs and integration patterns • Experience working as an ag
