Position Overview
As a Nuclear Engineering Data Scientist, you will apply advanced machine learning, hybrid modeling, and uncertainty quantification to complex nuclear engineering problems. This role suits candidates with strong research backgrounds and experience integrating AI into engineering workflows.
Location
This position is based on-site in Lynchburg, VA at the Advanced Technologies Office.
Your Day to Day as a Nuclear Engineering Data Scientist
- Develop and deploy machine learning models including DNNs, CNNs, and BNNs for nuclear engineering problems.
- Design hybrid modeling frameworks combining physics-based and data-driven approaches.
- Implement uncertainty quantification techniques like ensembling and Bayesian methods.
- Optimize nuclear engineering processes using AI methodologies such as transfer learning and generative models.
- Collaborate with teams to integrate ML models into nuclear engineering tools.
- Lead data augmentation, synthetic data generation, and domain adaptation efforts.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with focus on machine learning and AI.
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience.
- Expertise in deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.
- Proficiency in Python, C++, and MATLAB.
- Experience with nuclear codes: MCNP, Serpent, OpenMC, and CTF.
- Ability to develop and validate hybrid modeling techniques.
- Familiarity with uncertainty quantification and transfer learning.
- Strong publication record in AI and nuclear engineering.
- Excellent communication skills.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain DOE or DOD security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Nuclear Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- Experience integrating machine learning into nuclear engineering workflows.
- Knowledge of optimization methods for reactor design and fuel cycle analysis.
- Familiarity with generative models like CVAE for synthetic data generation.

Salary
The base salary range for this position in Virginia is $86,000.00 to $136,000.00 per year, subject to candidate qualifications and market factors.
