About the role
Position Overview
WSP is hiring an Early Career, Transportation Data Scientist based in Baltimore, MD with an expectation to work at the client site three days per week. In this role, you will join the National Emerging Technology Team to support and grow real-time arrival initiatives at the Maryland Transit Administration, improving the reliability of transit service throughout the Mid-Atlantic. You will work on strategic projects, gain valuable exposure across multiple transit modes, and contribute to a team of industry experts dedicated to enhancing the customer experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform Real-Time Transit Operation Data Analysis: Analyze transit operation data to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities for service optimization, and provide data‑driven recommendations.
- Develop and Maintain Real-Time Reports: Design and maintain interactive dashboards in Power BI and responsive webpages to facilitate clear data visualizations.
- Utilize Code to Parse and Process Data: Create and optimize queries and custom scripts to clean, process, and prepare data for analytical purposes.
- Assist in Automating Data Flows: Collaborate with Real-Time and IT teams to build streaming data pipelines and automate data flows, reducing manual efforts.
- Coordinate with Multiple Agency Stakeholders: Work closely with various departments to gather data, ensure data quality, and address analytical needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology, Statistics, or a related field.
- 1 to 3 years of applicable experience.
- Strong proficiency in SQL, Power BI, and data analysis tools; coding ability in Python/R is preferred.
- Experience with web application development for responsive dashboards and visualizations.
- Proven expertise in data analysis, visualization, and report generation for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Hands‑on experience building data pipelines (ETL/ELT) for real‑time and historical reporting.
- Exposure to batch processing/real‑time systems and open source technologies (e.g., Spark, MapReduce, NoSQL, Hive) is a plus.
- Familiarity with AWS data services such as RDS, Redshift, Glue, Athena, Kinesis, and Lambda Functions.
- Strong understanding of data modeling, data access, and storage techniques in big data platforms.
- Excellent collaboration skills and ability to coordinate with multiple agency stakeholders.
- Analytical mindset with a keen eye for extracting insights from large datasets.
- High attention to detail with a commitment to data accuracy and quality monitoring.
- Outstanding problem‑solving and communication skills, capable of conveying technical concepts to business partners.
- Flexibility to adapt to evolving data requirements and growth in real‑time data environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience supporting real‑time arrival initiatives for transit agencies in North America.
- Master’s Degree in a related technical field.
- Familiarity with D3.js or similar frameworks.
- Knowledge of project and program management software (e.g., Bluebeam, MS Project, Primavera).
- Experience in contract management.
