About the role
Position Overview
As an Entry-Level Technical Writer, you will report directly to the Technical Engineer. Your primary responsibility will be to research, interpret, and apply technical documents such as drawings, manuals, and specifications from government sources to create essential work documents including technical instructions, QA Work Books, Work Packages, Test and Inspection Plans, and Technical Work Documents (TWDs). This role will focus on projects involving Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical systems for government and commercial contracts.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparing accurate and compliant work packages and QA Work Books before project commencement.
- Defining testing criteria including gauge ranges, relief valve settings, and acceptance standards.
- Utilizing your technical expertise to resolve Condition Reports (CR) arising from modifications or discrepancies in the Statement of Work (SOW).
- Establishing foundational Test and Inspection Plans for various projects.
- Providing technical support for all contracts, assisting team members as needed.
Key Duties
- Supply daily technical support to the management team.
- Help develop procedures for Safety, Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical trades.
- Contribute to the creation of safety, quality control, and inspection procedures.
- Collaborate with customer QA and Safety representatives to set inspection and acceptance criteria.
- Review necessary quality/safety documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Examine Technical Work Documents and Condition Reports to ensure compliance with NAVSEA requirements.
- Recommend and implement changes to improve clarity in technical documentation.
- Assist in addressing SUBSAFE and other critical system issues.
- Support quality assurance efforts and assist in meeting internal and external client needs.
Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you should have:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, along with 1 year of experience in waterfront Quality/Engineering Technical Writing or Shipboard System Testing related to Navy Surface Ships or Submarine systems.
- Alternatively, 4 years of military Navy service or completion of a Maritime Trade School/Apprenticeship combined with 3 years of relevant experience.
- 6 years of experience in the required fields can also substitute for formal education.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to obtain and maintain access to U.S Military bases.
- Capability to secure a Secret Security Clearance.
- Familiarity with technical engineering training related to shipboard work.
Knowledge and Skills
Successful candidates should possess:
- Extensive knowledge of shipyard, marine, and commercial practices, inspection, and testing methods.
- A comprehensive understanding of relevant regulations and specifications.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to convey technical requirements clearly.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
Work Environment
The role may require access to ships and submarines and the ability to operate in various environments, ranging from confined spaces to high-traffic industrial settings. Candidates must remain calm under pressure and be adaptable to meet challenging production schedules.
