Overview
Join our dynamic team as a Lead Aviation Technical Writer where you will play a crucial role in shaping the communication of complex aviation concepts. We are looking for a seasoned professional with a robust understanding of aviation operations and the National Airspace System (NAS).
In this role, you will contribute to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) through the development and enhancement of technical documentation and guidance materials.
As an ideal candidate, you will showcase outstanding writing and editing abilities, the knack for synthesizing expert input, and a solid grasp of FAA documentation standards and aviation regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Research, draft, and produce premium technical documentation, reports, and guidance materials relevant to FAA and NAS systems, policies, and procedures.
- Translate intricate technical and procedural concepts into clear, engaging, and accessible content for various audiences, including engineers, air traffic specialists, and policymakers.
- Collaborate effectively with subject matter experts, engineers, and program personnel to collect, analyze, and validate technical data.
- Craft and refine manuals, specifications, and presentation materials, ensuring they adhere to FAA standards.
- Utilize your expertise in aviation terminology, NAS operations, and flight procedures to maintain technical accuracy.
- Identify opportunities for standardization and improved clarity across existing and potential documentation.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable technical writing standards, style guides, and quality criteria, including federal guidelines.
- Assist in the development and upkeep of electronic publications, digital content, and multimedia documentation as necessary.
- Manage multiple documentation initiatives simultaneously while ensuring a keen attention to detail and deadlines.
Required Qualifications
- U.S. citizen or green card permanent resident (3+ years of U.S. residency).
- Experience within the FAA environment.
- Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Technical Writing, or a relevant field, with 5+ years of applicable technical writing and editing experience; or
- A high school diploma with 10+ years of related technical writing or editing experience.
- At least 2 years of experience crafting or refining FAA aviation regulatory documentation or associated technical publications in aviation or aerospace.
- Proven ability to interpret and convey complex technical data and procedures into clear and concise documentation.
- Demonstrated experience creating content for FAA, DoD, or other federal aviation programs.
- Strong command of grammar, style, and technical writing standards; familiar with FAA and government style guides.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and related documentation or content management tools.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in supporting FAA programs, particularly in Aviation Safety (AVS), Air Traffic Organization (ATO), or NextGen settings.
- Understanding of FAA Orders, Advisory Circulars, and regulatory document standards.
- Experience in developing documentation related to NAS modernization, flight operations, or aviation safety initiatives.
- Knowledge of XML-based publishing systems, content reuse strategies, and structured authoring (e.g., DITA).

The projected compensation for this full-time role ranges from USD $78,900 to USD $123,300 annually, determined by factors including education, experience, and applicable laws.
