This position is remote, but candidates residing within a 50‑mile radius of Austin, Detroit, Milford, or Mountain View may be expected to report to the office at least three times a week.

The Role

The Marketing Applied Sciences team is dedicated to creating analytics‑driven solutions that empower GM's Marketing Organizations to meet their business objectives. As a Lead Data Engineer, you will design, develop, and maintain robust data pipelines and infrastructure, facilitating efficient data collection, storage, and analysis to support marketing initiatives. Collaboration with data scientists, data architects, and business stakeholders is essential to ensure access to high‑quality data that drives insights and aligns with GM's strategic vision. This role focuses on delivering innovative solutions and effectively engaging with a diverse data ecosystem.

What You'll Do

  • Develop analytical datasets that are accurate and consistent to assist advanced data science projects and business intelligence efforts.
  • Analyze business needs, identify relevant data sources, and create datasets that provide actionable insights.
  • Evaluate data quality and profile datasets to ensure they meet business objectives and analytical requirements.
  • Integrate and transform data from diverse sources, constructing scalable and optimized data pipelines.
  • Maintain thorough metadata documentation, logical models, and data dictionaries for analytical assets.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for analytical datasets, offering guidance and resolving queries from data scientists.
  • Implement process improvements, including automation, data delivery optimization, and enhancing infrastructure scalability.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5 – 7+ years of experience in data engineering or development, including proficiency in Python or Scala, SQL, and various data storage solutions (ETL frameworks, big data processing, NoSQL).
  • 3+ years of relevant experience as a data engineer or in a similar capacity.
  • 3+ years of experience working with distributed data processing (Spark) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Expertise in data streaming within Kubernetes and Kafka.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, preferably Azure; AWS or GCP experience will also be considered.
  • Comprehensive understanding of CI/CD principles and tools.
  • Familiarity with predictive and analytical modeling techniques.
  • Strong grasp of performance optimization strategies such as partitioning, clustering, and caching.
  • Proficiency in SQL and familiarity with key‑value and document stores.
  • Knowledge of data architecture and modeling concepts to facilitate efficient data consumption.
  • Excellent collaborative and communication skills, capable of working across multiple teams and disciplines.

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Understanding of data governance, metadata management, and data quality/observability principles.
  • Experience with schema design and data contracts.
  • Familiarity with various file formats and handling data ingestion.
  • Experience with Databricks, Snowflake, or related platforms.
  • Expertise in designing and implementing data ingestion frameworks for diverse sources (structured and unstructured data).

Compensation

  • Base Salary: $129,400 – $212,300, varying based on relevant factors.
  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program provides bonuses based on company performance, job level, and individual achievements.
