Join Battelle's National Security Business Unit as a Geospatial Researcher/Data Scientist and contribute to innovative R&D for the Army Geospatial Center and ERDC's Geospatial Research Laboratory. This position offers remote work flexibility, supporting client activities at Ft. Belvoir, VA. The Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL) is dedicated to advanced geospatial research, focusing on characterizing phenomena within physical and social environments for the U.S. Army. Your work will enhance the Army Geospatial Enterprise and develop technologies for military engineering, DoD installation management, and USACE projects.

Primary Responsibilities

• Review scientific literature to identify and apply appropriate research methodologies.
• Extract, organize, and analyze data from a variety of databases and files at different scales.
• Develop software tools utilizing statistical and machine learning techniques.
• Critically assess data for completeness, accuracy, and applicability.
• Communicate technical results effectively, emphasizing data visualization.
• Collaborate with team members across various locations.
• Contribute to technical reports and presentations, including visual aids and software tools.
• Implement methodologies to solve complex geospatial challenges.
• Create and enhance 3D urban models for operational use, focusing on efficient sharing in low-bandwidth environments.

Key Qualifications

• Experience in photogrammetry and remote sensing.
• Proficiency in coding, preferably in Python, with a focus on open-source software.
• Experience with collecting and processing point cloud data from LiDAR and EO sensor systems.
• Familiarity with 3D data visualization/manipulation software.
• Knowledge of 3D mesh generation and texturing.
• Expertise in data compression methods for 3D models.
• Experience with real-time 3D rendering and optimization.
• Familiarity with US Army geospatial end-user devices.
• Understanding of machine learning applications for feature extraction and model simplification.
• Knowledge of geospatial data standards for interoperability.
• Field experience in geospatial data collection and evaluation.
• Understanding of geodetic principles, registration, and georeferencing.
• Experience with survey control data collection and product generation.

• Military or DoD background is highly advantageous.
