Position: Lead Machine Learning Engineer – AI Research

As a Lead Machine Learning Engineer specializing in AI Research, you will take a pivotal role in driving GM's groundbreaking AI projects. Your responsibilities will include leading the design, prototyping, and deployment of advanced AI models applicable to vehicle design, manufacturing operations, robotics, and the simulation of physical systems. In addition to your technical leadership, you will help shape GM's AI research agenda, mentor a talented team of scientists and engineers, and represent GM in the global AI community.

  • Evaluate, prototype, and implement impactful AI solutions aimed at enhancing design and manufacturing operations within GM, potentially utilizing foundation models for large‑scale design tasks and generative AI technologies for robotics.
  • Develop and execute plans for integrating AI into a variety of processes at GM, including manufacturing, vehicle design, software development, and customer support.
  • Stay at the forefront of AI models and architectures, making informed choices regarding technology adoption and investment.
  • Assist in hiring and mentoring an exceptional team of AI scientists and engineers.
  • Lead the research and prototyping of advanced AI models, including foundation models and generative AI for the automotive and robotics sectors.

Your Skills & Abilities

  • PhD or equivalent in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
  • 8+ years of experience in AI/ML research and practical application development.
  • Deep knowledge of modern ML architectures including transformers and multimodal systems.
  • Proven success in managing AI projects from research through to scaled production.
  • Strong programming proficiency in Python along with experience in one or more systems languages (C++/Go/Java).
  • Experience deploying AI systems on cloud‑based GPUs/TPUs (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • A recognized thought leader in the AI/ML landscape, with demonstrated impacts such as research breakthroughs or patents.
  • Exceptional mentoring, influencing, and collaborative capabilities across technical and business divisions.
