Product Designer
Helen of Troy
About the role
About This Role
Join our Home & Outdoor division as a Product Designer, where you'll deliver innovative seasonal gear carrying solutions and special designs. This position works within our portfolio that includes OXO, Osprey, and Hydro Flask brands, and you may support one or more of these brands depending on business needs.
You'll be based in Cortez, CO with a hybrid work arrangement—we embrace flexible collaboration where you'll work in-office Tuesday through Thursday, with the option to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. This schedule is designed to support both collaboration and productivity, though hybrid eligibility may vary based on business needs and manager expectations.
What You'll Be Responsible For
The heart of this role is delivering all aspects of design from concept through pre-production. You'll conduct research on industry trends and current product function, then analyze how design can innovate and bring something new to the market. Your focus spans technical outdoor backpacks, travel gear, wheeled solutions, accessories, hydration packs, and beyond.
You'll build product specification and technical packages (tech-packs) proficiently in Adobe Illustrator for product sampling. When conceptualizing innovative solutions, you'll work closely with the Sample Room to understand sewing and construction capabilities, translating your designs into aesthetically pleasing, manufacturable products. Prototyping, testing, and reviewing design concepts to develop functional, high-quality solutions is central to your work.
Presenting your design thinking clearly at product reviews—through sketching, prototypes, color boards, and CAD—is essential. You'll interact with suppliers and developers to source appropriate materials, develop custom components where necessary using CAD and rapid prototyping processes, and research material manufacturing methods. Exploring, vetting, refining, and specifying pack colors, trims, and graphic details completes the design process.
What We're Looking For
You'll need a Bachelor's Degree in Product (Physical Product) or Industrial Design, along with 3+ years of professional product design experience specifically in bags, packs, and soft goods. A portfolio submission with your application is required.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud—including Photoshop, Illustrator, and In. Design—plus MS Office is essential. You should have a solid understanding of sewn and hard goods, seaming and blocking construction, and material properties. Communication skills matter tremendously here; you'll need to express yourself clearly both verbally and in writing through email, hand illustration, sketches, presentations, and phone or video conferencing.
You'll work unsupervised and toward strict timelines, so strong organization and record-keeping skills are critical. The ability to be flexible on the job and move freely from one project to another is important in this dynamic role. Familiarity with outdoor gear and components, paired with a keen eye for materials selection, will set you up for success.
International travel to Asia (Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, China, South Korea) is required as needed, approximately 15-20% of the time. You must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
Preferred Qualifications
If you bring a passion for outdoors, cycling, and traveling, that's a real plus. Sewing and pattern-making skills, along with proficiency in 3D CAD software, would strengthen your candidacy.
Compensation and Benefits
In Colorado, the standard base pay range for this role is $70,000.00 – $80,000.00 annually. This base pay range is specific to Colorado and may not be applicable to other locations. Actual salaries will vary based on several factors, including but not limited to location, experience, skill level, and performance.
Your total compensation package includes salary plus bonus, comprehensive healthcare, dental, vision, paid holidays, paid parental leave, 401(k) with company match, basic life insurance, short term disability (STD), long term disability (LTD), paid time off (PTO), paid charitable (volunteer) leave, and educational assistance.
