Responsibilities

• Coach, mentor, and grow a team of machine learning engineers and researchers while developing your coaching capability; partner with the team engineering lead on technical decisions.
• Take initiative and ownership in achieving goals, improving processes and solutions.
• Identify opportunities for cross‑team collaboration on new ideas and improvements.
• Facilitate knowledge sharing and advocate for engineering needs to non‑technical stakeholders.
• Collaborate closely with product managers to understand and contribute to the product roadmap.
• Drive planning and refinement of seasonal goals, ensuring alignment across company, group, and teams.
• Foster a collaborative culture and advocate for non‑technical collaborators' engineering needs.
• Own and drive delivery of large, cross‑team and cross‑group initiatives from ideation to completion.

You’re Probably a Match If

• You have experience in both technical and people leadership, driving decisions and delivering outcomes on technical projects, with a track record of managing and developing direct reports.
• You have previous experience as an ML researcher or leading ML research teams, with a proven record of managing long‑term research projects.
• You have experience or a strong interest in computer vision and preferably generative AI, working on image‑generation models.
• You possess strong research skills, stay abreast of deep learning and generative AI developments, and can translate cutting‑edge research into practical solutions that enhance Canva’s content library and user experience.
• You can support the team in balancing exploratory/innovative work with high‑priority feature delivery.
• You can effectively communicate the value of short‑ and long‑term features, translating technical details to business value and building stakeholder trust.

You will mentor and coach your team, collaborate on generative AI models used by millions of users each month, and have the freedom to explore new ideas, experiment with novel solutions, and implement creative approaches.
