Senior Data Engineer (Databricks Consultants )

Our client, a leading technology consulting and software engineering environment, is seeking experienced Databricks Consultants to join their growing Data Engineering capability supporting enterprise client delivery projects.

This opportunity is suited to consultants with strong Azure Data Engineering and Databricks experience who are comfortable operating within consulting-led, client-facing environments. The successful consultant will contribute to the design, development, and delivery of scalable enterprise data platforms across both modernisation and enhancement initiatives. The role requires a balance of hands-on engineering capability, stakeholder engagement, and collaboration within cross-functional delivery teams. Senior consultants may also be expected to contribute to technical leadership, mentoring, and squad oversight where required.

The environment is collaborative, delivery-focused, and strongly centred around engineering quality, team culture, and scalable client solutions. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity offering an initial 6-month contract with a strong possibility of permanent conversion based on mutual fit and business requirements.

The client operates on a hybrid working model, with preference for consultants based in Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain enterprise data solutions using Azure Databricks. • Develop scalable data pipelines, workflows, and transformation processes. • Contribute to both greenfield modernisation projects and existing enterprise platform enhancements. • Work across Azure-native data ecosystems including Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Synapse/Fabric, Spark/PySpark, and SQL-based solutions. • Engage directly with client stakeholders and delivery teams to translate business requirements into practical engineering solutions. • Collaborate within Agile, cross-functional teams consisting of Developers, QA Engineers, Business Analysts, Technical Leads, and Delivery Managers. • Support engineering best practices including scalability, performance optimisation, governance, and operational support. • Senior consultants may be required to mentor junior/intermediate engineers and contribute to technical leadership within delivery squads.

Required Skills & Experience

• Proven experience within Data Engineering environments. • Strong hands-on Azure Databricks experience within production environments. • Experience working across enterprise Azure data ecosystems. • Strong understanding of Data Engineering principles and modern cloud-based data platforms. • Experience with technologies such as: • Azure Databricks • Spark / PySpark • Azure Data Factory • Azure Data Lake • Azure Synapse / Fabric • SQL • Delta Lake • Ability to operate within consulting-led or client-facing delivery environments. • Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills. • Comfortable working within structured, team-based delivery models. • Relevant Degree required. • Azure and/or Databricks certifications advantageous.
