The Role

The Senior Engineering Manager for Data & ML Platform at Datavant is a player-coach: a hands-on technical leader who still ships code on the critical path, and an experienced people manager who grows engineers across data and ML disciplines. You will own the foundation that every Datavant product depends on: the data lake and warehouse that hold the world's clinical data, the ingestion and streaming frameworks that keep it flowing, and the ML platform that turns it into models, document understanding, and LLM-powered features, along with the operational guardrails that make it all safe for regulated healthcare data.

Manage Brilliant Engineers Across Three Teams

• Lake & Warehouse Infrastructure: the storage and query foundation: data lake / lakehouse, warehouse, table formats, governance, performance, and cost.
• Ingestion & Streaming Frameworks: the movement layer: batch and streaming ingestion, CDC, document intake, and the frameworks product teams use to land new sources safely.
• ML Platform: training and inference infrastructure, OCR and document-understanding pipelines, LLM serving and evaluation, feature store, model registry, and LLM observability.

The Data & ML Platform group is globally distributed, and so are its teams. You will manage the Ireland-based engineers across Lake & Warehouse, Ingestion & Streaming, and ML Platform; a peer Engineering Manager in the US manages the US-based engineers on those same teams. The teams themselves are not split by geography; we operate as one team across both locations, with shared goals, roadmaps, and tech leads. so you and your US counterpart will partner closely on hiring, planning, performance, and delivery.

This is a role for someone who treats AI as their primary teammate, not a buzzword. You should already be using Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar tools daily in your own engineering work and expect the same of the teams you lead.

You Will

• Set a unified vision across the three teams. Own one Data & ML Platform roadmap spanning the lakehouse, ingestion and streaming, and ML platform. Product teams should see one coherent platform, not three.
• Make the platform a multiplier. Balance unblocking product teams today with the technical investments the platform needs tomorrow. The measure of success is product teams moving faster because of the platform, not in spite of it.
• Offer a world-class ML platform. The paved-path layer for ML inference across Datavant, be it LLMs, VLMs, OCR, or our own ML models. Our product teams can deploy AI without worrying about caching, observability, cost-awareness, or PHI safety.
• Ship. Deliver on your teams' roadmap commitments. Influence the roadmap to incorporate the technical investments and longer-term bets the platform needs.
• Grow your teams' capacity to ship. Mentor your employees, match them to growth opportunities, provide timely feedback, and run great 1:1s. Actively contribute to hiring and team-making.
• Lead across Engineering. Partner closely with your peer Engineering Manager in the US on joint hiring, planning, performance, and day-to-day delivery. Work with product, research, data, and clinical stakeholders, and contribute to engineering-wide strategic decisions.
• Manage vendor and platform spend. Work cross-functionally with finance and infrastructure on cloud costs, model and API spend, GPU capacity planning, and contracts with cloud and model providers.
• Be accountable for regulated-data guardrails. Ensure the Data & ML Platform exceeds Datavant's obligations for safe and robust PHI handling, auditability, lineage, and clinical safety.

What You Will Bring To The Table

Experience as an Engineer and a Manager. At least 8 years of industry experience developing software or managing Cloud Infrastructure. At least 3 years of experience managing teams of Individual Contributors.

• Hands-on technical depth. You still write production code, review PRs, and can unblock a senior engineer by pairing or opening a PR yourself. You are comfortable staying in the weeds on the hardest problems.
• AI-native working style. AI fluency is a baseline expectation for this role. You use Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or equivalent tools as core parts of your daily workflow, and spend time developing your understanding of those tools to maximize your utility from them.
• Leadership track record. You have led data or ML platform teams through periods of high-paced execution, set long-term technical vision, and grown senior engineers into stronger engineers.
• Data platform experience. You have built and operated modern data platforms in production–batch/streaming data ingestion (e.g. DMS, Kafka), lakehouse or warehouse (e.g., Databricks, Snowflake, BigQuery), open table formats (e.g. Delta, Iceberg, Hudi), and the surrounding governance, catalog, lineage, and cost-optimisation tooling.
• Regulated-data instinct. Direct experience with HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, GDPR, or equivalent regimes–and a pragmatic approach to shipping quickly while meeting them.
• Exceptional communication. You are a proactive communicator, a good team player, and thrive in the ambiguity of a fast-paced, rapidly growing company.

Nice to Have

• Experience with healthcare data specifically (EHR, claims, clinical documents, HL7/FHIR).
• Experience with GPU capacity planning at the strategic / tactical / operational horizons.
• Experience leading a team that runs its own evaluation and red-teaming for clinical or safety-sensitive AI.
