About the role

Position Overview

The Senior Project Manager / Estimator is responsible for leading projects from tender through to closeout while ensuring safety, schedule, quality, and budget targets are met. This role manages client relationships, oversees site teams and subcontractors, prepares and reviews estimates, and contributes to the ongoing development of the company’s health and safety culture.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Lead multiple construction projects from pre-construction through completion.
  • Develop and manage project schedules, work plans, and look-ahead plans.
  • Oversee site supervisors, foremen, trades, and subcontractors to ensure work is completed safely, on time, and to specified quality.
  • Manage project budgets, cost tracking, and forecasting; identify and address variances.
  • Prepare and manage RFIs, change orders, submittals, site instructions, and progress reports.
  • Chair or participate in project meetings with clients, consultants, and internal teams.
  • Oversee project closeout, including inspections, deficiencies, as-built documentation, and turnover packages.

Estimating & Preconstruction

  • Lead preparation of detailed estimates and tenders, including quantity takeoffs for labour, materials, and equipment.
  • Review drawings and specifications for scope, constructability, and risk; identify value-engineering opportunities.
  • Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate bids from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Develop budgets and pricing strategies for design-build and negotiated projects.
  • Maintain and refine estimating databases, unit rates, and historical cost information.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Act as primary point of contact for clients, consultants, and key subcontractors.
  • Manage expectations, resolve issues, and maintain strong long-term relationships.
  • Represent A.J. Martin and Sons professionally on and off site.

Health & Safety Leadership

  • Promote and enforce company health and safety policies and procedures on all projects.
  • Work with field crews to plan safe work methods and controls.
  • Participate in or lead job hazard assessments (JHAs), toolbox talks, and site safety meetings.
  • Ensure site inspections are completed and documented; follow up on corrective actions.
  • Conduct incident reporting and investigations; help identify root causes and preventive measures.
  • Assist with training and mentoring staff on safe work practices and regulatory requirements.

Administration & Coordination

  • Help prepare purchase orders, work orders, and basic contracts as directed.
  • Maintain organized digital and paper project files.
  • Complete project invoicing and submission to customers.
  • Onboarding of new employees.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, consultants, inspectors, subcontractors, and internal team members.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field; or relevant industry experience.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in construction project management and estimating.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, drawings, specifications and contract documents.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and construction software.
  • Experience with health and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation to office and job sites.
  • Advanced Drone license as asset.
