About the role

About

Are you ready to push the boundaries of what you can achieve?
At Coinbase, we are on a mission to enhance economic freedom globally. This ambitious goal requires us to be at our best every single day as we develop the next-generation on-chain platform and redefine the global financial system.

We are looking for an exceptional candidate who is passionate about our mission and believes in the transformative power of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. We value individuals eager to make a lasting impact, thrive under pressure, and actively seek feedback to grow. You should be someone who takes on challenging problems and works collaboratively with high-caliber colleagues.

Our work culture is intense and is not for everyone. However, if you are eager to build the future alongside top talent who hold high expectations of one another, there is no better place to be.

While many roles at Coinbase are remote‑first, we value in‑person collaboration. Participation at our San Francisco or New York City offices is expected multiple times a year for team‑building and alignment. Your attendance is encouraged and fully supported.

We are searching for a Senior Software Engineer to anchor the Policies Platform – Coinbase's essential engine for managing policy, decision‑making, and authorization. In this role, you will help shape the technical direction of one of Coinbase's most pivotal infrastructure teams. You will lead the transition to an AI‑driven, self‑serve policy engine while securing alignment across engineering, compliance, legal, and product teams. Your choices will influence how dozens of engineering teams across Coinbase enact, deploy, and rely on compliance logic at scale. The Policies Platform is responsible for policy management, decision‑making, and authorization across 20+ domains and 40+ dependent services, handling millions of requests every minute. This role suits someone who can navigate ambiguity, provide clarity, and engineer systems that create substantial leverage beyond their own team.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical strategy and architecture for the Policies Platform, including the AI‑native policy authoring system, Policy Framework v2, edge authorization, and an intuitive self‑serve developer experience.
  • Define and guide the technical roadmap, making thoughtful tradeoffs between speed, reliability, and scalability as the platform expands to accommodate new Coinbase products and international regulatory requirements.
  • Lead high‑stakes initiatives, including AI‑powered impact simulation before policy changes are implemented, an AI chatbot for compliance self‑service, and embedding authorization into API gateway‑level signed tokens.
  • Establish cross‑team alignment and commitment, collaborating with over 20 dependent domain teams, regulatory and compliance stakeholders, and engineering leadership to foster the adoption of new platform standards and practices.
  • Define engineering processes and quality practices, from code review standards for policy‑as‑code to CI/CD pipeline specifications for automated load and regression testing.
  • Deliver high technical output while also empowering the broader team, leading through action rather than just guidance.
  • Contribute to organization‑wide initiatives, including OKR planning, technical prioritization, and long‑term platform strategy in partnership with engineering leadership.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of designing and deploying scalable systems – managing high‑throughput, high‑availability services that handle millions of requests in a production environment.
  • Proven experience leading AI/LLM product development, such as building AI agents, code generation systems, or developer‑facing AI tools in production.
  • Strong grasp of Go, gRPC, Kubernetes, and service mesh frameworks.
  • The ability to drive technical clarity in ambiguous, critical situations – you can transform vague challenges into clear solutions and execute those plans effectively.
  • A history of influencing across organizational lines – gaining buy‑in from stakeholders, aligning competing interests, and nurturing enduring cross‑team partnerships.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills – you create technical design documents that instill organizational confidence and promote shared understanding.
  • Remote‑friendly yet on‑site presence at either the San Francisco or New York City office approximately once a week for architecture reviews, stakeholder meetings, and team offsites.
  • Demonstrated ability to responsibly use generative AI tools and copilots in everyday tasks, continually adapting as tools advance and integrating human‑in‑the‑loop methods to deliver actionable outcomes.

Nice to haves

  • Expertise in authorization and policy systems (e.g., OPA, Cedar, Zanzibar‑inspired systems) or similar platform expertise with a willingness to acquire deep policy domain knowledge.
  • Experience developing AI‑native developer platforms.
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance engineering (financial services, KYC/AML, MiCA, or the equivalent).
  • A background in policy‑as‑code, GitOps, or large‑scale automation.
  • Previous experience in open‑source policy or authorization ecosystems (e.g., OPA, OpenFGA, Casbin).
  • Experience formulating platform adoption strategies, including self‑service onboarding, documentation, and developer advocacy.
