About the role

Purpose

The Technical Writer is to write, edit, index, or revise a variety of documentation such as technical articles, reports, training materials, computer-based training (CBT), and manuals for a wide range of uses and training curriculum. Collaborate with programmers, engineers, and product management during design phases to gain an understanding of ibml product. Analyze requirements of projects to determine types of publications needed. Ensure accuracy and completeness of technical documentation. Requires excellent oral and written communication skills and an understanding of programming concepts, operating systems, networking and engineering concepts. May provide guidance to technical trainers and company personnel. Works under general supervision and typically reports to a supervisor or manager. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Create, edit, and maintain technical documentation for current and future applications and scanners i.e., technical manuals, software manuals, computer based and/or web-based training modules. Documentation including, but not limited to technical documentation needed for internal company information, production control, field service, and/or training needs
  • Create, edit, and maintain procedural documentation including but not limited to sensitive internal company information, product change notices, software update notices or procedures, and/or "how to" user guides and application guides.
  • Write, edit, produce, and maintain web-based and in-software documentation
  • Write, edit, produce core curriculum for training department.
  • Working on an Agile team; familiarity with common Agile practices and environments.
  • Support quality assurance efforts, assemble documentation for audits and aid the Engineering Department in research for documentation that is compliant with both domestic and international regulations
  • Research and evaluate new documentation tools and methods; document and improve documentation processes
  • Maintain documentation standards and keep abreast of current information by associating with professional individuals or societies or by reviewing professional publications, newsletters, e-mail, websites or by continuing professional development/training
  • Aid and support supervisor in the development of documentation project plans and timelines
  • Work with and train lower-level employees and provide informational assistance on an ongoing basis
  • Collaborate with departmental programmers and engineers to collect and interpret input from Customer Services or other departmental personnel
  • Provide support in presentations and training to Training Department personnel.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein

Preferred Skills, Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • A minimum of a College degree in one of the following fields; Journalism, English, Technical Communications, Computer Science, Education or related field
  • Minimum three years writing experience, preferably in a technical field with an emphasis on technical documentation
  • One to three years experience in information systems or information technology
  • One to three years experience working on an Agile team is a plus or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical information, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency with Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Office, PC word processing, RoboHelp, MadCap, Flare (preferred)
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator is a plus
  • Experience with audio/video capture and editing tools along with computer-based training author ware, database design concepts, and web/HTML tools is a strong plus.
  • Capable of analyzing trends, verifying data, writing, proofreading and editing documentation materials and correspondence.
  • Adobe Acrobat and other appropriate software necessary to create technical documentation incorporating text, graphics, photographs, etc. Ability to create and maintain websites.
  • Effective presentation skills with the ability to facilitate and coach learners. Knowledgeable in adult learning principles, creative, dependable, organized, and professional
