Mott MacDonald Canada has a new opportunity for an Eastern Canada Geotechnical Lead to join our dynamic and growing team working on iconic infrastructural projects, locally, nationally, and globally.

Position Overview

This strategic lead development role in our Canada Unit, based in our Toronto office, offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of geotechnical engineering. You will bring your expertise in geotechnical engineering and team leadership to a diverse range of projects, including transportation infrastructure, excavations, tunnels, water and wastewater systems, energy, pipelines, ports, and other critical infrastructure. Responsibilities

  • Management and delivery of ground exploration programs, geotechnical design and analysis, technical reports, and design evaluations for transport, water, energy, built environment, and advisory business sectors.
  • Manage and develop a team of geotechnical engineers to deliver geotechnical investigations, geoseismic evaluations, and geotechnical design work.
  • Build internal and external client relationships with other engineering disciplines, project managers, and clients in the business sectors.
  • Lead proposal efforts and compile geotechnical proposals for a variety of infrastructure projects.
  • Manage subconsultants and subcontractors to provide geotechnical investigation services including drillers, utility locators, surveyors, traffic control, and geotechnical laboratories.
  • Participation and engagement with the geotechnical community in Ontario (specifically the GTHA).
  • Coordinating with the Canada Geotechnical Lead to plan and lead the hiring of new staff – identifying gaps in the team, filling them, and planning for growth.

Skills & Qualifications

  • A strong academic background, with a Bachelor’s level degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering (a Master’s degree would be considered an asset).
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) status in Ontario.
  • 15+ years of relevant industry experience in geotechnical consultancy (not including education) (work with the Toronto Transit Commission, Metrolinx, Ministry of Transportation Ontario, and/or Ministry of Infrastructure would be considered an asset).
  • Registry or experiences for application to be registered in MTO’s Registry Appraisal and Qualifications System (RAQS) for medium or high complexity geotechnical engineering and/or tunnelling categories is preferred.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills; able to collaborate effectively with all levels of staff and clients (technical and non‑technical) and nurture the development of junior staff.
  • Strong technical skills associated with geotechnical investigations, geoseismic evaluations, and geotechnical design work, including working understanding of geotechnical software (e.g., Plaxis, GeoStudio packages, Rocscience packages, Ensoft packages, etc.).
  • Ability and enthusiasm for supervising the work of others, including check and approval of key deliverables.
  • Gained project management skills and demonstrable technical lead and collaborative capabilities.

Compensation

  • Multiple factors such as qualifications, overall experience and position responsibilities will be used to determine the successful candidate's actual salary within the expected range.
  • This position is for an existing vacancy. The expected salary range for this position is $170,000 – $210,000.
