Job Overview
The Staff Accountant will be responsible for accounting and financial reporting for multiple residential mortgage investment portfolios and/or corporate entities. The Staff Accountant will have full range responsibility for one or more investment funds and corporate entities. Duties will include the posting of trading, P&I, loan payoff, and securitization activity; reconciliation of general ledger and third‑party servicer accounts; reconciliation of cash accounts, assist with accounts payable, consolidation of subsidiary entities into the parent companies; preparation of financial statements; and the support of audit and tax reporting. We are seeking a hands‑on creative thinker who takes ownership of areas of responsibility and proactively pushes process development and improvement.
Responsibilities
- Full responsibility for accounting functions for assigned investment funds and/or operating companies, including:
- Preparation of journal entries
- Preparation and posting of daily cash transactions
- Posting of daily servicer remittances
- Maintenance of asset roll‑forward ledgers
- Maintenance of subsidiary accounting ledgers
- Performs review and reconciliation of all loan system balances to the general ledger.
- Responsible for accurate and timely month‑end close duties as assigned.
- Accounting for securitizations and other asset financing facilities.
- Reconcile, analyze and review general ledger and cash accounts to ensure accuracy and validity of accounting transactions and the company’s books and records.
- Assist with the accounts payable process.
- Prepare monthly financial statements, including consolidation and preparation of footnote disclosures.
- Coordinate and resolve issues with third‑party mortgage loan servicers.
- Support to external auditors (Big 4 auditors).
- Preparation of information for external tax preparers.
- Assist the CFO and Controller with special projects as needed.
- Other ad hoc duties and responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in accounting or equivalent.
- Two or more years of experience or equivalent.
- Portfolio and/or investment fund accounting experience desired.
- Mortgage origination, servicing and securitization accounting experience a plus.
- Mortgage and investment taxation experience a plus.
- Working knowledge of US GAAP, especially regarding investment fund and mortgage accounting.
- Financial reporting experience – consolidation of multiple entities and the preparation of financial statements and other reports to stakeholders.
- Advanced MS‑Excel skills and proficient in other MS Office applications.
- Demonstrated ability to work with large data sets and high transaction volumes.
- Experience with Microsoft Business Central a plus.
- Working knowledge of data collection, data analysis, and evaluation.
