The tasks of the KompZ KFE include scientific work in quantitative crisis and conflict research, data science, and supporting the German federal government in predicting and assessing crises and conflicts. For this purpose, interdisciplinary methodological expertise is being built up at the center, and innovative research approaches and IT tools are being tested and developed. This is intended to scientifically soundly optimize existing approaches to early crisis detection in terms of content and technology and bring them to application readiness. The center thus makes a significant contribution to improving the performance of IT support systems for users and thus also to the national process of early crisis detection. The job profile of the advertised position relates to the leadership of the Data Science research area in crisis and conflict research.
Responsibilities
- Leadership of the Data Science research area in crisis and conflict research with a focus on the development, validation, and application of data-driven methods for early crisis detection and crisis monitoring
- Conception, management, and quality assurance of studies and research contributions in the field of crisis and conflict research
- Development of solutions within the framework of commissioned projects and advising the users of the KompZ KFE on technical issues
- Personnel responsibility in consultation with project management for the Data Science research area in crisis and conflict research at the KompZ KFE
- Advising project management on methodological, analytical, and data-related issues at the interface of research, application, and strategic early crisis detection
- Participation in and supervision of publication projects, as well as participation in regular working meetings and contribution to the reporting system of the KompZ KFE
Qualifications
- A completed academic university degree (Master, Magister, or Diplom) in Political Science, Social Sciences, Statistics, Data Science
- Alternatively: a completed academic university degree (Master, Magister, or Diplom) in a comparable field with relevant methodological focus and professional experience in research or industry, proven by professional activity of generally not less than two years
- Relevant experience in scientific research or application-oriented projects in the field of quantitative conflict, political, or social research, proven by professional activity of generally not less than two years
- German language skills at C2 level and English language skills at a minimum of C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
Desired
- Very good programming skills in Python or comparable programming languages (e.g., R) and experience with reproducible data analysis workflows
- Project management experience
- Publication experience in quantitative social science research, especially in crisis and conflict research
- Experience with text, geo, or satellite data
- Interest in close cooperation and coordination with external partners from the ministerial, academic, and private sectors
